Why Behind the Dorm Walls Exists

Most families never think about their student's dorm building until something feels wrong — and by then, it's surprisingly hard to find clear information. Lawsuits involving campus housing are often settled quietly, with records sealed. Maintenance histories can be incomplete or hard to access. Universities are frequently slow to test, slow to acknowledge a problem, or unwilling to do either. And students are often not diagnosed with anything until well after they've already left the housing in question — which means the window to document what actually happened has usually already started closing.

There isn't a regulatory body that oversees dorm living conditions the way OSHA oversees a workplace. Parents are often left to figure out, on their own and in real time, what to pay attention to, what to save, and who to call. We built Behind the Dorm Walls to close that gap — not with legal or medical advice, but with practical, levelheaded resources for the part every family has to do themselves: noticing, documenting, and asking better questions.

What We Do

We publish plain-language educational content on building-related concerns (mold, moisture, indoor air quality, and other environmental issues sometimes found in older campus buildings), practical documentation tools, and — with explicit permission — stories from students and parents who've been through this.

What We Don't Do

We are not a law firm, a medical practice, or an environmental testing company, and nothing here should be read as a factual claim against any specific school. We don't diagnose illness or establish that a building caused a health condition. Where we reference someone's personal story, we say so clearly — and we distinguish it from anything independently verified through a public record or document.

A Word on Where This Started…

This project began with our own family's experience with a serious mold-related illness, and the frustration of finding almost no resources built for parents navigating it — no one to ask, no clear next step, and a university that had no obligation, and little willingness, to help us understand what was happening. We built the resource we wish had existed for us.

Our Commitment

Calm language. Careful sourcing. A clear line between what someone reported and what's been verified. If you're here because something doesn't feel right, our goal is simple: help you recognize it, document it, and figure out your next question — without needing to already have all the answers.

    Share your Story

We're building a space for families to share what they've been through.

If you've navigated a suspected mold, moisture, or air quality issue in your student's housing, your story matters — and this will eventually be the place to share it. You'll always choose exactly how it's used, from kept completely private to published with your name, and nothing you share will ever go further than what you agree to.
